The Best Time to Visit Central California: A Seasonal Guide to Reedley, Fresno, and Beyond

April 12, 2025

If you’ve ever wondered when the best time is to visit Central California, the answer is… it depends. Each season has its own charm out here. Whether you’re chasing blossoms, floating down the Kings River, or cozying up in a farmhouse with citrus trees outside your window.

At Navelencia Farms, we host guests all year long, and no two stays are ever the same. Here’s a look at what you can expect through the seasons, including tips for exploring Navelencia, Reedley, Dinuba, Kingsburg, Clovis and Fresno.

🌸 Spring (March – May)

Best for: Wildflowers, farmers markets, fresh air, and blossoms

Spring is a local favorite — the weather is warm (but not hot), and the countryside comes alive. Citrus trees are in bloom, orchards across Reedley and Dinuba are bursting with blossoms, and the scent of orange flowers fills the air around our farm.

What to Do:

  • Blossom Trail: Drive or bike the Blossom Trail, which winds through Reedley, Orange Cove, and Sanger. It’s a photographer’s dream.
  • Farmers Markets: Fresno, Clovis, and Kingsburg all have bustling spring markets. Pick up strawberries, asparagus, local honey, and wildflower bouquets.
  • Clovis Rodeo (April): A Central Valley tradition with a parade, concerts, and rodeo action.

Back at the farm, spring is when our citrus trees are heavy with oranges, and the olive grove turns into the perfect picnic spot.

☀️ Summer (June – August)

Best for: River days, national park trips, stone fruit, and golden hour magic

Summer gets hot in the Valley, but that just means it’s time to cool off. Our farmhouse becomes a refreshing retreat after a day of adventure, especially if you’re hiking in the Sequoias or exploring Kings Canyon.

What to Do:

  • Day Trips to Sequoia & Kings Canyon: Head up early to beat the heat. Pack a picnic and hike shaded trails like Crescent Meadow or Zumwalt Meadow.
  • Kings River Fun: Locals love tubing, fishing, and cooling off by the water.
  • Fruit Stands & U-Pick: Dinuba and Kingsburg are stone fruit country in summer — think peaches, nectarines, and plums. Pull over for juicy roadside finds.
  • Clovis Night Market: Food trucks, live music, and handmade goods under string lights.

Tip: Bring sunscreen, stay hydrated, and plan outdoor activities in the morning or evening when it’s cooler. Then come back to the farm for stargazing and air-conditioned naps.

🍂 Fall (September – November)

Best for: Harvest, pumpkins, cool mornings, and cozy evenings

Fall is a seriously underrated time to visit. The summer crowds disappear, the air gets crisp, and farms across the region roll out their best seasonal offerings. At Navelencia Farms, we start transitioning from harvest mode into holiday prep.

What to Do:

  • Local Farm Festivals: Check out Fall Harvest Festivals in Reedley and Dinuba, complete with hayrides, corn mazes, and pumpkin patches.
  • Wine Tasting: Kingsburg has several family-run vineyards nearby with fall releases.
  • Reedley Fiesta (October): A fun, family-friendly event with a car show, live music, and a parade.
  • Thanksgiving Farm Stays: Book early for a peaceful holiday retreat with full kitchen access and a cozy farm vibe.

The sunsets this time of year? Absolutely golden.

❄️ Winter (December – February)

Best for: Snowy day trips, oranges on the trees, and peaceful retreats

Winter is when Navelencia Farms really shines. While other places are gray and chilly, here in Reedley, the skies stay blue and the orchards are bursting with navel oranges. Guests love waking up to misty mornings, fresh citrus, and quiet days on the farm.

What to Do:

  • Snowy Sequoias: It’s magical up in the parks — snow-dusted giants, fewer crowds, and incredible photo ops. Chains may be required, so check conditions first.
  • Christmas Tree Lane (Fresno): A festive drive-through light show that draws people from all over the Valley.
  • Reedley Electric Parade (December): Think classic small-town holiday charm with floats, lights, and hot cocoa.
  • Citrus Season: Oranges, mandarins, and lemons are at their peak — straight from the trees to your hand.

Winter stays are all about slowing down. Grab a good book, enjoy a citrus snack, and cozy up at the farmhouse with loved ones.

Local Cities Worth Exploring Year-Round

No matter the season, the towns surrounding our farm offer local flavor and friendly vibes:

  • Reedley: Our home base. Cute downtown, good eats, and a charming river trail.
  • Dinuba: Small-town feel with some great local taco spots and farm stands.
  • Kingsburg: A little slice of Sweden in the Central Valley. Great bakeries, boutique shopping, and fun festivals.
  • Fresno: The biggest city nearby, full of dining, breweries, music, and museums. Don’t miss Forestiere Underground Gardens.
  • Clovis: Old Town Clovis is packed with antique shops, wine bars, and fun seasonal events.
